Dream Vacation in Corfu

Experience Corfu: A Guide for Visitors

Corfu is not just a destination; it's an experience.

Explore the jewel of the Ionian Sea. Corfu, with its rich history, stunning landscapes, and vibrant culture, awaits you. Discover everything this enchanting island has to offer, from pristine beaches to historic sites.

Breathtaking Beaches

Experience the diverse beauty of Corfu’s coastline:

  • Glyfada Beach is known for its golden sands and crystal-clear waters.
  • Paleokastritsa is famous for its picturesque bays and underwater caves.
  • Sidari is home to the unique Canal d'Amour, a natural wonder.

Beaches Near Kommeno and the Northeast Coast

The northeast coastline around Kommeno is less developed than the resort beaches on the island’s western side — the water is generally calmer, the crowds thinner, and several of the best coves in this area are only reachable by boat.

  • Barbati Beach — 15 minutes by car. One of the northeast coast’s longer pebble beaches. The water drops quickly from the shore and visibility is exceptional. Sunbeds and a taverna on site in summer.
  • Agni Bay — 15 minutes by car. Three excellent fish tavernas sit right on the beach — Toula’s, Nikolas, and Agni — all popular with the sailing crowd. Worth booking ahead in July and August.
  • Kerasia Beach — 20 minutes by car (the last section on an unpaved track), or an easy boat ride from Gouvia Marina. No facilities on site. The water is consistent deep turquoise and the beach stays quiet even in high season.
  • Dafnila / Kombitsi — 5 minutes from the villa, a sheltered bay on the Kommeno peninsula itself. Low-key, limited sunbeds, good for a morning swim without travelling far.

Glyfada (30 min) and Paleokastritsa (35 min) on the western coast offer a different character — larger sandy beaches with more facilities and more organised water sports. Worth a full day trip; plan for the drive back in the evening when traffic in the Old Town area picks up.

Historic Landmarks

Step back in time with Corfu’s rich historical tapestry:

  • Old Town of Corfu A UNESCO World Heritage Site with Venetian, French, and British influences.
  • Achilleion Palace Built by Empress Elisabeth of Austria, offering magnificent views and gardens.
  • Mon Repos The birthplace of Prince Philip, now a museum and public park.

Visiting Corfu’s Historic Sites: What to Know

Most of Corfu’s main historic sites are concentrated in and around the Old Town and the southern part of the island. A day trip from the villa covers the main landmarks comfortably, with time for a proper lunch in between.

  • Corfu Old Town (UNESCO World Heritage Site) — Allow at least half a day. Walk the Liston arcade (Venetian-built, modelled on Paris’s Rue de Rivoli), explore the narrow streets of the Campiello neighbourhood, and visit one of the two fortresses. The Old Fortress entry is inexpensive; the New Fortress is often less crowded. Morning visits avoid the crowds that arrive with day-trip ferries from the mainland.
  • Achilleion Palace — 25 minutes from the villa. Built by Empress Sisi of Austria, later used by Kaiser Wilhelm II. The terraced gardens with sea views are the main draw. Check opening hours before visiting — seasonal closures apply and it’s closed on certain national holidays.
  • Mon Repos — In the southern suburbs of Corfu Town, 15 minutes from the villa. The grounds are a public park with free entry; the Neo-Classical villa inside houses a small museum of Corfu’s ancient history. Birthplace of Prince Philip. Quiet and often overlooked by day visitors.
  • Angelokastro — Byzantine fortress above Paleokastritsa (35 min from the villa). A ruin rather than a restored monument, approached by a short steep climb. The views of the northwest coastline from the ramparts are among the best on the island.

Outdoor Adventures

For the adventurous spirit, Corfu offers a range of activities:

  • Hiking Explore trails like the Corfu Trail, which spans the length of the island.
  • Water Sports Enjoy snorkeling, scuba diving, and sailing in the clear Ionian waters. Five Stars Villa guests can arrange private boat trips and snorkelling excursions directly through the villa.
  • Cycling Discover the island’s scenic routes and charming villages.
  • Tennis The villa’s full-size carpet tennis court is available to all guests, with certified private lessons available on request.

Outdoor Activities from the Villa

Most outdoor activities in Corfu need no advance planning from Kommeno. A few — the longer boat tours and private tennis coaching — benefit from booking a few days ahead, especially in July and August.

  • Tennis at the villa — The full-size carpet tennis court is available to all guests throughout the stay, at no extra cost. Certified private coaching is available with advance notice. See tennis services.
  • Boat trips from Gouvia Marina — 10 minutes from the villa. Full-day routes to Paxos and Antipaxos, the Diapontia Islands, and the Blue Lagoon at Sivota, plus a two-hour sunset cruise. Private boats for up to eight guests. See boat trip options.
  • Snorkelling — The sea caves at Paleokastritsa (35 min) and the clear waters around Antipaxos are among the best snorkelling spots in the Ionian. Equipment is easy to hire locally in Paleokastritsa or Gouvia.
  • Corfu Trail — A 220 km waymarked trail running the length of the island north to south. Individual sections make good day walks; the northern sections near the villa pass through villages and olive groves and are less demanding than the southern stretches. No specialist equipment required.
  • Cycling — Rental shops in Gouvia (10 minutes) offer standard and e-bikes. The roads around Kommeno and Dassia are manageable on a bike in the morning before traffic builds up.

Getting Around from Five Stars Villa

Five Stars Villa is located on the Kommeno peninsula in northeast Corfu — one of the most conveniently positioned areas of the island for exploring everything it has to offer.

  • Corfu Old Town (UNESCO World Heritage Site) — approximately 10 km, 15 minutes by car
  • Corfu International Airport — approximately 7 km, 10 minutes by car
  • Achilleion Palace — approximately 18 km, 25 minutes by car
  • Glyfada Beach — approximately 22 km, 30 minutes by car
  • Paleokastritsa — approximately 28 km, 35 minutes by car
  • Sidari & Canal d'Amour — approximately 38 km, 50 minutes by car

Car hire is recommended for exploring the island at your own pace. The villa is also accessible to Corfu Town by local bus. Guests who prefer exploring the coastline by sea can arrange private boat trips through the villa — an ideal way to reach beaches and coves that are unreachable by road.

Where to Eat Near Kommeno

Corfiot cuisine has its own character — Venetian and French influences alongside the standard Greek repertoire. Several of the best restaurants on the island are within 15 minutes of the villa.

  • Etrusco (Kato Korakiana, 10 min) — Consistently ranked among Greece's finest restaurants. Modern Corfiot cooking in a converted farmhouse; advance reservation is essential in summer.
  • Agni Bay (15 min) — Three tavernas side by side on the beach. Toula's, Nikolas, and Agni all serve fresh fish caught that day. The setting in the bay is worth the trip regardless of what you order.
  • Taverna Ninos (Kommeno, 5 min) — A neighbourhood local: Corfiot cooking, generous portions, no pretension. The kind of place you find yourself returning to mid-week.

Corfiot dishes worth ordering: Pastitsada (beef or cockerel in spiced tomato sauce over pasta), Sofrito (thin-sliced veal in white wine and garlic), and Bourdeto (white fish in spiced pepper sauce). Full restaurant guide with more options near the villa.
